COURSE DESCRIPTION
The program is designed to help students learn about the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional needs of children, and to provide the skills and knowledge necessary for planning and carrying out programming which optimizes individual development of young children. The program blends theory about how children develop with a hands-on application of theoretical principles. Students are given the opportunity to explore child development theory and to apply it to programming for infant, toddler, preschool and school-aged children. Included in this sequence is developmental theory and practice for children with special needs as well as an overview of relevant communications theory and philosophy. Co-operative education will provide observation and programming opportunities for students. Co-operative education is central to the learning experience, so students are placed in the child care center for one to two days each week.

OBJECTIVE
As early childhood educator assistants, graduates can look forward to becoming professional team members, working in child care centers, schools, community and drop-in centers. Their duties:・ Participate in all aspects of the program.・ Reinforce teacher instruction.・ Assist in supervision of children in the classroom and outdoors.・ Assist with snacks and lunch.・ Assist with maintaining resource materials.・ Perform duties such as helping clear up after play activities, hang art work, etc.・ Observe all safety procedures・ Help with dressing and toilet routines・ Respect confidentiality of information ・ Be a positive role model for children at all times.・ Develop good observation skills.・ Inform the supervisor or teacher of problems/concerns.
